It is widely believed a “Wocca” is the term used to describe a Saxon chief. By the Victorian ages the name evolved into Oakingham before evolving once again into Wokingham.

Wokingham gained town charter in 1583 and developed a reputation for its silk production.

In the civil war between 1643 and 1664 the town was raided by both sides. Looting was commonplace with the destruction of buildings common. Around 20% of the town’s structures were raised to the ground. 

Brick making became a major industry in the years to follow. Following the demise of this industry Wokingham followed the rest of the Thames Valley with hi tech and the service industry becoming the most important industries in the town.
