Mortimer may be small but together with its local villages and Tadley has an extensive history. The village has a number of Bronze Age burial grounds nearby, later at least one was also used by the Anglo-Saxons.
Nearby the village of Silchester is home to one of Britain’s most important Roman settlements known as Calleva Atrebatum. The town served as a link between Londinium (London), Aquae Sulis (Bath), Glevum (Gloucester) and Sorviodunum (Salisbury).
The village of Mortimer was granted to one of Henry VIII wives during the Tudor period. Another Royal, Princess Anne, visited Mortimer Fairground for a horse display in 1976.
During the 1950’ and 1960’s nearby Tadley experienced massive growth due to the construction of the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) in Aldermaston.
