We were originally called out to repair a door following a break in at some commercial premises in Newbury, West Berkshire. We carried out a temporary repair and measured up for a new steel door and frame.
After removing the old wooden door and frame the new four by two steel frame is pushed into the brick aperture.
With the frame in place we used a Bosch SDD power drill to drill holes for the raw plugs, for this we needed to make sure we used the correct drill size for the plugs. The new frame was attached to the brickwork of the building using hexagon headed screws.
With the frame fitted we then attached the one-inch square steel door top to the frame using machined screws. By using cordless drivers the installation time was cut down dramatically.
The steel door is made up of four by two box section, with steel plates welded to the frame to make the door. This makes the door to heavy to lift into its position. We decided to use three by two timbers and a length of four by two to create an A frame on the floor. By moving the four by two along the A section helped us to lift the door into the exact position for hanging. The use of an A frame also provided us with greater control of the door when lifting. Carpet tiles were used to protect the paint work on the door whilst moving the door.
The door was then secured to the frame with a continuous steel hinge that runs the entire length of the door. As with the door stop the door itself is secured with machine screws.

The door is secured by two BS3621 ERA 333-51 Euro mortise dead locks with cylinder shields. Both the locks were made to pass. As the door is hung on a continuous hinge there is no need to install hinge bolts.

The above photo shows the door finished from the inside of the building in the car park. By having the door hung in this manor makes it almost impossible to kick in. Also, the outer door plate over laps the edge of the door frame hiding the bolts, making a bolt cutting attack very difficult. The door and frame were power coated brown to match the old and existing doors and frames. The installation itself took just under 3 hours.
